Lake Toba: a paradise for cyclists

Wanna have an active vacation? Then be sure to hop on a bike during your stay at Hotel Barbara!

Around Lake Toba, you’ll find a rare combination in Asia: excellent asphalt roads with minimal traffic. Moreover, you’ll cycle along the water at an altitude of at least 900 meters, sparing you from the sweltering heat. It’s no wonder that cycling is gaining popularity here. More and more, you’ll spot tourists and groups of locals exploring the island on their bikes.

Every cyclist can enjoy at Samosir, Lake Toba

Whatever type of cyclist you are, Samosir (the island on Lake Toba) has something for you. For example, you can ride from Hotel Barbara to Tuk Tuk and explore the hills behind Tomok. You’ll be rewarded with stunning views. Of course, you’ll have to tackle some hills, but it’s manageable for anyone with a basic level of fitness.

Prefer unpaved paths? Venture off the main road and cruise along deserted lanes and authentic kampungs (villages). The locals will be happily surprised to see cyclist passing their homes!

Climb the mountain or go arround the island

Like to climb a mountain? Then conquer Mount Toba, located just 7.5 km from Hotel Barbara. For the enthusiasts: ten kilometers at an average gradient of 7 percent. Along the way, you’ll relish magnificent vistas and find cafés to catch your breath. Once you reach the summit, you can either turn back or go around half (80 km) or the whole (130 km) island.

Your cycling adventure starts at Hotel Barbara.
