Behind the ring road encircling Samosir Island, nestled within Lake Toba, lies a hidden hiking paradise with enchanting trails. From novice hikers and families to mountain enthusiasts, there’s something for everyone. It’s truly a hidden gem as there are hardly any marked trails. But fear not! Hotel Barbara has laid out the possibilities for you.
1. A Walk in the Park (1 km)

Looking for a short stroll, perhaps with little ones? Head to Getsemane Park, just around the corner from Hotel Barbara. In the park, you’ll follow a beautiful Stations of the Cross path, leading to a chapel at the top of a hill. A round trip to the park, including the walk there, is about 1 km. Perfect for a quick walk!
Access to the park is free, with a voluntary contribution requested to maintain it.
2. Short Hike to Pea Farm Café (5 km)

For a lovely walk without going too far, visit Pea Farm Café. This charming café sits approximately 150 meters above Lake Toba, offering unique views. Besides drinks and snacks, the owner can provide valuable information about hiking routes. To get there, exit Getsemane Park at the top and follow the road. A round trip covers about 5 km.
3. To Tomok (20 km)

Up for a more challenging hike? Head left from the park and follow the road to the village of Tomok. Along the way, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas, authentic kampungs, and beautiful nature. The return trip takes you through the hills behind Tuk Tuk village.
Several side trails on the route lead to mountain paths ascending to the hilltop. Interested? Consider hiring a guide, and Hotel Barbara is happy to arrange it for you!
4. The Hills near Panggururan (Starting from 25 km)

Serious hikers and mountain goats can explore Panggururan. Hotel Barbara can assist with transportation to and from this town. Behind Panggururan, you’ll find an extensive network of roads in the hills. Most are wide enough for a car but rarely seen. What you will encounter is pristine nature, coffee fields, remote kampungs, and of course, breathtaking views. Due to the elevation, it’s pleasantly cool.
If you plan to hike here, Google Maps (or a hiking app) is advisable. Bring food and drinks since there aren’t many eateries in this remote area.
Afterward, you can enjoy a meal in Panggururan or relax your tired legs in the nearby hot springs.
