In Lake Toba, you’ll find Samosir Island. The mountain ridge in the middle of the island is worth exploring too! Wondering how? This blog has all the details.
On Google Maps, it’s labeled as Mount Toba, but locals simply call it “the mountain.” Whether you prefer walking, cycling, scootering, or driving, this mountain offers something for everyone.
For hikers and mountain goats
Behind the ring road, multiple paths lead to the mountain’s peak, but there are no signposts. Bring a guide from Hotel Barbara to avoid getting lost. Our favorite route leads to a unique heart-shaped waterfall. Here, you can take a refreshing dip after the challenging climb!

You’ll climb about 600 meters on steep paths. These walks aren’t suitable for small children or those with poor or moderate fitness. Carry drinks and snacks as you’ll be walking through nature with no cafes or shops.

Want to conquer the mountain by bike? You can! Prepare for a challenging 10-kilometer climb with an average gradient of 6%. So, this climb is suitable for experienced cyclists.

At the top of the mountain, you can, of course, turn around and head back to Hotel Barbara. However, you can also turn right for a breathtaking route along the mountain ridge. And if you truly want an extensive journey: go straight and drive around the entire island. More on explore Lake Toba by motorbike, bicycle or car? Click here to read this blog!
